Finally, finished pitching our tent, we stood up and saw that the site we had chosen for camping had the perfect view.
Camping is a subject that most of us are at least familiar with. It provides many opportunities for writing prompts your students can use to get creative.
How to Use the Prompts
These prompts can be used in a few ways.
- Write the numbers and pick one out of a hat. The number you choose is your writing prompt.
- Or try randomly assigning the prompts every day for a week.
- Another suggestion is to pick your favorite number and go with that prompt.
The ideas are endless.
Camping Prompts
- Describe the perfect place to camp. Whether it is real or imagined, use colorful vocabulary.
- What is something interesting you would take camping? Why did you choose that?
- Explain why camping is the best with your family. Or maybe why it isn’t the best.
- Who do you go camping with? Do they make trips fun?
- Be creative and discuss how you would get away from a bear in your campsite.
- What is your favorite thing to do while camping? Why?
- Create a campfire story. Make it memorable, so others will tell it again next time you are camping.
- How do you go camping? In a tent? In camper?
- Do you think weather could ruin your camping trip? Make up a story about how some extreme weather could affect a camping trip.
- What is your favorite ghost story? Would you change it? How?
- Have you ever been to summer camp? Explain what you think it would be like, even if you haven’t gone.
- What animal would you like to share a campsite with? What would happen?
- Describe what would happen if it rained for your entire camping trip. How would that make you feel?
- What are the best campground games? Can you invent a new one?
- What makes a campsite the perfect place to pitch your tent? Describe everything about your perfect place.
- What are your favorite camping smells? Describe them in detail.
- Do you make s’mores when you camp? Come up with a new variation on the classic.
- What makes it fun to camp at the beach, and why?
- Describe a place you would like to go camp, but have never been, and how you think the trip would be.
- Go on a nature walk while camping. Tell what you think you would see.
- Use the word “camping” to write an acrostic poem about camping. Be creative.
- Describe going camping in your backyard. What would you do, who would you go with, would you sleep in a tent?
- Describe an especially memorable camping trip. Why is this the trip you remember?
- Design a campground. Describe what your perfect campground would include.
- What is your favorite camping meal?
- What makes camping special to you? Do you have any memories that explain why?
- How do you help set up the campsite? Is that what you would like to do? Why or why not?
- Imagine something unexpected happening on your camping trip, and describe what it would be.
- When you camp, do you play any special games?
- Write the best camping story you can think up. Use lots of details and descriptive words.
- Describe something that went wrong on a camping trip.
- Describe the funniest thing that has ever happened while camping.
- If you could build the perfect camping vehicle, what would it be like?
- Do you take your pets camping? Design and describe a campsite for your pets.
- What important lesson have you learned from camping?
- Describe what might happen if you fed the wrong animal while camping.
- Do you wish you could camp all the time? Why or why not?
- What part of camping is the worst to you? Describe why.
- Does your family ever embarrass you while your camping? Describe what happened in detail.
- Have you ever heard of “glamping.” Whether you have or haven’t, be creative and describe what you think this type of camping is like.
- How does camping help you appreciate the environment? Describe how camping has made you more thoughtful about our planet.
